Colon Baptist Church holds 185th Anniversary Celebration

COn June 25, 1837, (six months after Michigan became a state) The Baptist Society of Colon was chartered and called Its first pastor. The group meet at a farmhouse outside of town until 1845 when they built their first building in town and became the First Baptist Church of Colon. The church moved to its fourth and current location at 200 Frank Avenue in the 1970s and changed its name to Colon Baptist Church.
Colon Baptist Church celebrated its 185th Anniversary on Sunday, June 26,2022. Deacon John Kroeger shared important highlights of the church's history in the Sunday School hour. Jeff Minniear, newly installed missions pastor (Continental Baptist Mission), gave a charge to the church regarding its current opportunities. Jeff and his wife, Deb, are assisting Colon Baptist Church through a revitalization ministry that was coordinated through the MARBC and CBM. Grace Baptist Church in Marshall, MI, is serving as the revitalization partnering church in this endeavor. Grace's pastor, Brandon Crawford, helped coordinate the Minniear's involvement at Colon. Grace Baptist Church is the sending church for the Minniears.
The services also featured Lori Baxter and Janet Kaukonen, the widows of former Colon Baptist pastors, assisting in playing musical instruments for the worship. A delicious carry-in lunch followed the worship service which provided opportunities for making connections and reminiscing. The day concluded with an afternoon service that included greetings from family members of past pastors, including those of Dr. Joseph Stowell (former GARBC National Representative) and Dr. Joseph Bower (long time MARBC pastor and leader in the association). Both men came to Christ as teenagers through the ministry of Colon Baptist Church. Chris and Jeanie Brown, missionaries with Life Action Ministries, shared a testimony and special music. Jeanie spent her childhood years at Colon Baptist Church. MARBC Ministry Director Ken Floyd concluded the afternoon service with a message that challenged the church as it looks to Christ for its future ministry.

Morales family fire recovery update, June 2022
We are grateful for John Beecham who is serving as our Project Manager for the rebuilding. If you want to know any information about the rebuilding project or wish to offer to assist, please contact John at (231) 301-4522, or by e-mail at: John_beecham47@yahoo.com."

Dear Family of God,
In August of 1998, Isidro “Pepe” Morales and his wife Rosina moved to the Grant area from Mexico with their three young children as missionaries to plant a Hispanic church for the Spanish-speaking people in our community. Grace Hispanic Baptist Bible Church was established and thousands of people have heard the Good News of Jesus Christ in their heart language. For more than 23 years Pepe and Rosina have faithfully served the Lord both in the Southern Newaygo County and Northern Kent County areas of West Michigan as well as in three States of Northern Mexico with yearly mission trips to support local Mexican pastors and churches.
On March 21st of this year their home caught fire and burned. While we praise the Lord that nobody was injured, the home and most of its contents were a total loss. Though the insurance company was fair and generous in the settlement of the policy, due to changes in the banking and zoning laws between the purchase of the insurance policy and the time of the fire, the Moraleses have found themselves to be severely under-insured for the actual cost of replacing their home. With the assistance of some dear brothers in Christ who have experience in construction we have determined that, after factoring in their insurance settlement, the Morales family is at least $125,000.00 short of what they need to rebuild their home. This estimated shortfall assumes that most of the labor will be donated and does not include the cost of replacing all of their furnishings.
We are writing to you today as friends of the Morales family and supporters of their ministry to ask if you would prayerfully consider giving a generous gift to help them cover this shortfall so that they can rebuild their home. Pastor Pepe is 62 years old, and we would love to see Pepe and Rosina be able to continue to minister as long as God gives them strength without the heavy burden of a mortgage in their golden years. Therefore, we are praying and trusting that the Body of Christ will support them so that their home may be rebuilt without the need for a new mortgage.
Would you please do four things to help the Morales family in their time of need? First, please pray for them as they continue in the ministry without any pause, even as they deal with their loss and the process of recovering. Second, please give generously to enable them to rebuild their home without debt. Third, if you or someone you know would be willing to donate your time and talents to the construction effort, please send your contact information to our Project Manager John Beecham at john_beecham47@yahoo.com. And fourth, will you please share their need with others who may be willing to join us in prayer and giving to provide for their needs? May the Lord richly bless you!
In Christ,
Tim and Linda Bont, Carl and Gloria Miller, John and Patsy Beecham, Jim Uhe, and Paul E. Newton

Morales House Fire update, April 27
Dear Family of God,
Let’s start this update with a huge and heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Morales family! Your prayers, personal expressions of support, material and financial support in this trying time have been an enormous blessing and comfort to Pepe, Rosina, Candy and their entire family! May the Lord richly bless you, as you have blessed them in His love!
It has been a while since our last update to you all about the Morales family’s situation. This has been mostly due to our desire to not send out “updates” that do not really have much in the way of new information. The number one question that we have been getting is: “How much money will the Morales family need to replace their home?” We have been waiting to send out an update because we really wanted to be able to give a good answer to that question. However, since the information necessary to provide a solid answer to that question has been delayed more than we had hoped, we are writing to you all today to let you know what is going on and what lies ahead.
The main thing that we have been waiting on to be able to give a substantive answer to the pressing question mentioned above has been the insurance payment. The insurance company had told Pepe and Rosina that they would be sending a check a week ago last Friday. When it did not come on that date they were told that the case was being reviewed prior to payment. To date they do not yet have a check. The insurance company has up to two months to make the settlement payment, so the Morales’ are waiting patiently. Please keep praying that the settlement will be full and fair without any need to engage in long, drawn out appeals.
Once they have the insurance settlement they will need to pay off their current mortgage with the proceeds, and the remainder will then be available to them for rebuilding and replacing their lost possessions. We have spoken with their bank’s mortgage official. Here are the simple facts about the mortgage options:
After praying about the less than excellent options above, we do not believe it would be the Lord’s will for them to suffer under a crushing mortgage for their remaining years. Therefore we are praying for the Lord to provide all of the funds necessary for their rebuilding without any mortgage or debt at all. Will you please join us in praying and giving to this end?
With this in mind, we would like to share with you what we have learned regarding giving gifts and donations to Pepe and Rosina for rebuilding their house in a way that they will get the most benefit from. The vast majority of taxpayers do not itemize their deductions. If you do not itemize your deductions, then you do not need a tax receipt for your gift. Below we will address giving both for those who itemize their deductions and those who use the standard deduction.
If you do not itemize, then the best way to give to help Pepe and Rosina rebuild would be a direct gift to them. According to IRS rules, an individual can give up to $16,000 per year, per recipient without triggering the gift tax. For example, a husband could give $16,000 to Pepe and $16,000 to Rosina and the wife could do the same, totaling a gift from a couple of $64,000 to Pepe and Rosina. And by giving the gift in this manner there is no tax liability to either the giver or the recipient. This example is used for illustration purposes only. So if you do not need a tax receipt, you can make your check(s) out to: Isidro Morales and/or Rosina Morales. By making the check out to either Isidro (Pepe) or Rosina, 100% of your gift will go to them tax free.
If you itemize your deductions and want a tax-deductible receipt, we are more than happy to issue you one, just make your check out to: Grace Hispanic Baptist Bible Church and indicate it is for Morales’ Fire Relief. So, for every gift you send in for Pepe and Rosina in the name of the church, please indicate whether or not you need a tax-deductible receipt. (We will assume that you want a tax receipt unless you tell us that you do not need one.) Please continue to send all checks to:
Grace Hispanic Baptist Bible Church,
4061 E. 22 Mile Road,
Kent City, MI 49330
We will keep track of the progress toward our end goal and ensure that all gifts get to Pepe and Rosina in a timely manner as they come in. To date there have been just over $10,000.00 in donations received.
We are very grateful for the generous work of our dear brother John Beecham, who is coordinating the rebuilding efforts as Project Manager! John has worked up a rough floorplan for the rebuild and is working on getting an overall estimate of what the total cost will be. Once we have this estimate, we will share it with you all, along with future details regarding work to be done. One immediate need we have is for people who have experience with the following areas who would be willing to provide estimates for these services based upon the blueprints: 1) smoke and mold abatement, 2) kitchen, 3) plumbing, 4) electrical, and 5) HVAC work. If you can help with any of these, or know anyone who can, please contact John at (231) 301-4522.
Thank you for your prayers, your loving support and your generosity to the Morales family during this time of trial! Many prayers of thanksgiving have been lifted before our Father’s throne for all of you over the many years of partnership in the ministry of the Gospel because of your faithful support!! We look forward to all that the Lord will continue to do to reach the Spanish-speaking world for Christ as we continue on together for His glory!!

Once they have the insurance settlement they will need to pay off their current mortgage with the proceeds, and the remainder will then be available to them for rebuilding and replacing their lost possessions. We have spoken with their bank’s mortgage official. Here are the simple facts about the mortgage options:
- Their bank will not finance a double-wide to replace their destroyed double-wide;
- They cannot get a loan large enough to pay for a modular home;
- If they took the maximum mortgage that they could qualify for it would not be enough to build a stick-built home without a great deal of help in funds and volunteer labor. This is assuming that the mortgage and the proceeds of the insurance settlement for the home would primarily pay for only the building materials and that nearly all of the labor would be donated. (If any significant amount of labor had to be paid for, this option would also not be possible.) However, not only would the monthly payments with this option be higher than they could easily manage, but if they took out a 30 year mortgage to get the lowest payments and the best interest rates on the loan, they would be looking at having a mortgage hanging over their heads until they were in their 90s.

Hundreds Gather for Church Ministries Conference in Grand Rapids

Over 700 people from dozens of Michigan churches gathered for spiritual edification and encouragement at the Church Ministries Conference on Friday-Saturday, March 4-5. The conference is sponsored annually by the Grand Rapids regional association of the Michigan Association of Regular Baptist Churches. Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, served as the host church. The church will also host the GARBC Annual Conference on June 27-30.
Over 40 displayers were featured at the conference. The primary emphasis of the conference are the practical workshops relating to various areas of church ministry. Over 70 workshops featured in 4 sessions dealt with topics relating to ministry to children, youth, student ministry, women, men, cultural issues, counseling, evangelism, discipleship, leadership, and technology.
This year’s theme was “The Shepherding of Souls” which was developed in the three general sessions by Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, the new president of Cornerstone University. Dr. Moreno-Riaño focused on Biblical passages that emphasize the call, context, and competency of shepherding ministry. He reminded the attendees, “The Christian servant’s main calling is to make Jesus central in our lives and ministries. Our personal Biblical preparation is what God will use to lead us to His divinely prepared opportunities.”

Our personal Biblical preparation is what God will use to lead us to His divinely prepared opportunities.”

"COVID Changes Worth Keeping" panel discussion

The Grand Rapids Association of Regular Baptist Churches held the first Breakpoint luncheon of the new season at Magnify Church-Northview on September 21. The luncheon featured a panel discussion and interaction on the topic, "COVID Changes Worth Keeping." Jeff Burr, GRARBC moderator shares the following summary of the meeting.
“It is easy to focus on the negatives related to COVID – there are certainly many to choose from. But we chose to focus on silver linings and ways in which the disruption of COVID perhaps pushed us to consider healthy changes. When we stopped passing the offering plate, many of our people shifted to online giving. The fact is that younger generations are not writing checks anyway. The majority of the churches represented, do not intend to reinstate the offertory. Communion patterns were also disrupted. Most are ready to be done with the prepackaged wafer and cup! But many churches have adopted new patterns in which congregants come forward to receive the elements. Many indicated that they would continue to utilize some of these new participatory patterns going forward. Zoom meetings and livestream broadcasts are not replacement for basic Christian community. But many churches have found virtual meetings to be very effective and efficient when it comes to conducting business. And most newcomers are vetting the church online before attending in person. So COVID has forced us to “up” our livestream game!”

SMARBC Quarterly Meeting, September 23
The fall gathering of the SMARBC took place on Thursday, September 23, at First Baptist Church of Brooklyn, MI. Our speaker was Ron Kenney, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Battle Creek. Pastor Kenney was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer over the summer. He spoke to our group about his diagnosis, course of treatment, and current condition. He shared the opportunities he has had to witness to friends, family, and medical staff through this experience. One particularly helpful tool has been YouTube, where Ron posts regular updates on his condition and shares thoughts from Scripture with his audience.
Pastor Ron shared his thoughts from John 9, where Jesus' disciples encounter the man born blind. The disciples asked him, "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him."
He also shared that the most significant lesson he has learned through this ordeal is just how much he is loved--by God, his family, and his church. He asked us to pray for wisdom, strength, and more witnessing opportunities as he continues his chemo treatments.
Thank you, Ron Kenney, for your willingness to speak to us today. Your words were powerful.

First Baptist Church, Petoskey celebrates new church campus and gives Praise to God for His direction and provision

Casey Smith, pastor of First Baptist Church in Petoskey, shares a special testimony regarding God’s wonderful provision of a new church campus following a season of spiritual difficulty for the church.
“[Following a season of spiritual turmoil in the mid 2000s, God provided for a new church campus in amazing ways.] In 2010 a large local radio station asked if we wanted to broadcast our morning service. We did not have the income but proceeded by faith.
A new summer visitor enjoyed my messages on the friendship of God, and donated the monies needed to cover the broadcast. Three years later the same individual donated a large amount of stock so that we could try to build. The 20,000 stock shares were only worth $300,000, so building a new facility was still only a dream. However, in two years the stock tripled in price. We sold it the shares for about $1 million. We did not know if that would be enough to do the building. We went ahead by faith.
Only one construction company would bid on the project. Their Christian manager offered to work for half his normal commission, giving up $50,000 so we could have a building. Our architect was forced to redraw the building from steel to wood, costing us another $70,000. We asked if the builders would build till we told them to stop for lack of funds, and they agreed. Without our asking, a member who was a finish-carpenter volunteered 5 months of 6 days of labor per week, as well as donating all the needed doors and trim, out of beautiful natural cherry wood.
To God’s glory, the entire building project came in $100,000 under budget, so we were able to finish the entire project. We have added several things we thought we might have to do without: a steeple, chairs, flooring, shrubs, mature trees, cabinets, and more. We now have a multi-use building with no steps, a game room, a nursery that views the auditorium, heat and insurance bills that run 1/4 of the previous building, and a new family of five. Paving and a new sign are also planned for installation before the fall season.
Our old building’s sale will put us well into the black, with all bills paid and a large amount in savings. By His grace, the Lord has blessed us with a new building that will meet the needs of our current church family and a growing body in the future. During this season of transition and construction we have had the joy of reaching new people in our community via the radio during COVID. We have also had the privilege to lead some to Christ who were indirectly connected to the building project."
It has been our blessing to observe Casey and Sharon Smith's faithful ministry with the First Baptist Church family for many years. Their faithful commitment to Christ, along with that of the church family, has been a great example to our churches in the northern part of Michigan. It has been the blessing of the MARBC to partner with First Baptist Church and others in the region through the CPR - Church Partner Relationship ministry.

SMARBC's Annual Expositors Summit benefits dozens of pastors

Michigan Expositors Summit
On April 15th, nearly fifty Michigan pastors gathered at Grace Baptist Church in Marshall for the annual Michigan Expositors Summit, a half-day seminar designed to help gospel ministers hone their preaching skills.
This year’s speaker was Ken Brown, pastor of Community Bible Church in Trenton. Ken’s first session, entitled “Preaching to the Unchurched,” discussed Jesus’ and Paul’s practice of preaching and teaching regularly to non-believers and offered suggestions for how preachers today might do the same. He also explained the “language gap,” “culture gap,” and “relevancy gap” between the churched and unchurched and how pastors might shape their messages to bridge those gaps.
Ken’s second session, entitled “Cultivating Your Pulpit Presence,” suggested ways that pastors might become less self-conscious in the pulpit in order to develop a more natural speaking style. His suggestions were simple: they should reflect deeply on their preaching text, apply it to their own lives first, and then cultivate a “passion to connect” with the audience. He also encouraged pastors to resist the temptation to draw undue attention to themselves with joke-telling and other gimmicks.
Ken’s final session was entitled “Preaching for a Lifetime.” He offered practical suggestions for planning one’s preaching calendar, crafting individual sermons, and guarding one’s weekly schedule in order to have enough time to prepare fresh messages each week.
Each participant received a complete set of Ken’s teaching notes, a free book on homiletics, and lunch afterwards. The video recordings are also available on Grace Baptist Church’s YouTube Page:
The next Summit will meet on March 31st, 2022. The scheduled speaker is Pastor Bryan Murowski of Bethany Bible Church in Belleville. The theme will be “Preaching Difficult Texts of the Old Testament,” with workshops entitled “Preaching the Genealogies of Scripture,” “Preaching the Violent & Sexually Explicit Texts,” and “Preaching the Theologically Complex & Controversial Texts.” Further information can be found at GraceBaptistMarshall.com/Summit

Frances "Fran" Nelson, former pastor's and MARBC state representative's wife, with the Lord

Frances Doreen Nelson (nee Bush) went to be with the Lord from her home in Greenville, North Carolina, on December 18, 2020. Having celebrated her 95th birthday on October 17, she was diagnosed with a terminal condition just three days later and immediately began completing pet projects, telling family and friends, “I will be joyful every day and more so thereafter,” a phrase that fittingly describes her zeal and gratitude for life.
Fran was born in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada on October 17, 1925, the second child of Archibald Franklin Bush and Elizabeth Edna Bush (nee Parker). After completing grade 13 at Burlington High School, Burlington, Ontario, Frances earned her R.N. at The Hamilton General Hospital School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Religious Education at London Bible Institute, London, Ontario. She and Alfred Edric Nelson (July 6, 1920-April 6, 2007) met at LBI and married at Freeman Gospel Tabernacle, Burlington, on August 25, 1951. Fran actively supported Alf’s pastoral ministries to Michigan churches including Alaska Baptist Church, Kingsley Baptist Church, and Parr Memorial Baptist Church, Petoskey. She served alongside with Alf when he was selected to serve as the MARBC State Representative in 1983. She took upon herself the role as “Mrs. Shepherd” until their ministry with the association concluded in 1990. She then encouraged others alongside Alf in his role as Seniors Pastor at First Baptist Church, St. Johns. The Nelsons faithfully served together until God called Alf into His presence in 2007.
Frances’s life was characterized by unswerving faithfulness, service and love for the Lord, and strong commitment to the church communities of which she was a member or pastor’s wife. She nurtured friendships with adults and children alike and, through cards and letters, maintained relationships with hundreds of friends, including her great-grandchildren whom she wrote every month. She valued books, learning, nature, gardening, needlecraft, games, and most importantly, family (6 children, 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren) and friends – she lived life to the fullest with her signature smile and joyful, enthusiastic spirit. She will truly be missed!
Found among her papers, shortly before her death, was this letter that Fran wrote that was to be sent after she departed for glory:
Dear Ones,
I just wanted you to know that this will be my last letter to you. We've had a happy journey together, some longer, some shorter, and you have been a very special part of my life. I've changed addresses several times these past years, but now I've gone to my final home and have no forwarding address, so you can remove me from your address file.
I'm reminded of an old Gospel song we sang years ago - "On the happy golden shore, where the faithful part no more, when the storms of life are o'er, meet me there!" I'll be looking for you!
The answer is in John's gospel, chapter three, verse sixteen, "For God so loved (you) that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
Much love,
Fran / Aunt Fran / Grandma Fran
Ken and Sharon Floyd share this tribute regarding Fran's encouraging life and ministry:
Fran was such a special servant of God and a friend to so many. She was well equipped to serve with Alf as a pastor's wife and then as "Mrs. Shepherd" to the many pastors' wives serving alongside their pastor-husbands across the State of Michigan.
Fran could have been a multi-millionaire had she so desired. The cards that she crafted to mail faithfully to so many of us over the years would have put most of the prominent greeting card companies out of business had she chosen to sell them. She remembered everyone on every occasion.
We are humbled and blessed by the fact that we were included in some of those "pet projects" that she had to complete before entering into the presence of her Savior and Lord. She sent us an anniversary card at the end of November as well as a Christmas card a week later. We will cherish the messages that she conveyed in both.
In the last column that she penned for the “Baptist Testimony” monthly newsletter prior to their retirement from the Michigan Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Fran wrote of “The Delights of God.” Quoting from 1 Samuel 15:22 she stated, “’Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.’ May we determine as David did when he said, “I will delight myself in Thy commandments which I have loved” (Psalm 119:47). Then shall we delight the heart of God, be blessed in our own hearts and bring glory to Him.”
We give thanks to God for this precious servant who, like her dear Alf, has heard the commendation from her Lord, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Perhaps Alf was waiting and ready to play a welcoming song on the French horn for her?!

Emmanuel Baptist Church in Flint celebrates 100th Anniversary
Pastor John Scally gives this report regarding Emmanuel Baptist Church's recent 100th anniversary celebration: "We had a wonderful day celebrating our 100 Year anniversary at Emmanuel! The theme of the day was thanking God for the past knowing that our best days are ahead. Former Pastor Harold Constant who led the church into its present facility was the special speaker. He reminded us that the God who led people through the Depression back when the church began is the same God who’s leading us through the Corona Virus now. After his impactful message, we celebrated with a continental breakfast, video presentation, and viewed pictures from every decade. It was a phenomenal day! Praise our Great God!"
Grace Hispanic Bible Baptist Church celebrates new believers and baptisms

Pastor Pepe Morales and Associate Pastor Paul Newton rejoice in the recent opportunities God has given the Grace Hispanic Bible Baptist Church to reach new migrant workers with the Gospel. The church had the opportunity this past summer to come in contact with several Haitian friends who had come to western Michigan to find work on area farms. A large contingency first visited at the church's anniversary service in August. During the follow up to these visits, the church had the opportunity to share the Gospel and the love of Christ with these dear people. The church continues to have a major outreach to several ethnic groups in Newaygo, Oceana, Montcalm, and Kent counties.
