From The Baptist Testimony – Volume 56 Number 5 Sept/Oct 2010

CHEBOYGAN, Faith Baptist Church (Jim Currie, Pastor) – Faith Baptist Church recently held a commissioning service for Dr. Eric and Melissa Miller.  The Millers, along with their children Samuel and Elizabeth, were commissioned for medical missionary service in Togo, Africa.  They will be serving with other missionaries from the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE).  Eric has served for several years as a surgeon and in his new role will minister at the Karolyn Kempton Memorial Christian Hospital in Tsiko, Togo.  Pastor Jim Currie, the senior pastor at Faith Baptist, shared the commissioning message.  Rev. Don Trott of ABWE, Dr. Bob and Shirley Cropsey, and Missionaries Todd and Jennifer DeKryger also participated in the service.  The Millers hope to leave for language studies in France after the Christmas season.  They currently have 85% of their needed support.
COMSTOCK PARK, Alpine Baptist Church (Doug Compton, Pastor) – Alpine Baptist Church celebrated a groundbreaking service for a new gymnasium and classroom addition on Sunday, August 22.  The gymnasium will feature two basketball courts.  The new addition will allow the church to remodel and retrofit other areas of the current facilities for more effective ministry.

FLINT, South Baptist Church – The South Baptist Church family celebrated the official installation of Rev. Scott Snyder as their new senior pastor on Sunday, September 12.  God has blessed Scott and his wife Carol with three children: Kayla, Juliana, and Payton.  Pastor Snyder previously served on the staff of Breesport Baptist Church in Breesport, New York, for 14 years. During that time, he served as the Associate Pastor of Youth and Worship for 9 years, and then as Lead Pastor for 5 years.  Scott is the son of Pastor Frank and Karen Snyder, who serve in the MARBC at First Baptist Church in Middleville.  A lunch reception followed the service.

FRUITPORT, Cloverville Baptist Church (Josh Rager, Pastor) – Cloverville Baptist Church rejoices in several blessings received during the summer months.  A young couple seeking pre-marital counseling was led to faith in Jesus Christ by Pastor Rager.  They were included in a group of seven recent converts who observed believer’s baptism later in the summer.  The church was also involved in a ministry trip to help with a Continental Baptist Missions inner-city church plant in Cleveland, Ohio.

LUDINGTON, Calvary Baptist Church (Tim Yankee, Pastor) – Calvary Baptist Church celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sunday, August 1.  Highlighting the day’s celebration were messages and testimonies by Pastor Joe Hilyard (1982-1992) in the Sunday School hour and Pastor John Fields (1993-1998) in the morning worship service.  A celebration picnic was held on the church grounds following the morning services.  Rounding out the day’s festivities was an afternoon service that included music, testimonies, and reflections from founding pastor Jack Nichols (1970-1973).

WITH THE LORD

Dr. Brad Quick, pastor of First Baptist Church in Elyria, Ohio, and ministry leader in the GARBC fellowship went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, August 19, 2010.  Brother Quick served as Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church since 1984. He held a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan, a Master of Divinity degree from Grace Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Baptist Bible Seminary.

Brad leaves his loving wife of 40 years, Debra; his children, Kim and Kevin Kerr and their children, Macy and Ellie, who are members of First Baptist Church of Rochester, Michigan; Kevin and Barbi Quick and their children, Bradley, Peter, and Olivia, of LaGrange, Ohio; his father, Wilbur Quick, of North Olmsted, Ohio; and his brothers, Brian Quick of Elyria, Ohio, and Terry Quick of Ashville, N.C.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Dr. Gary Anderson, president of Baptist Mid-Missions, led the service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 11400 LaGrange Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

CAMPUS MINISTRY SUMMIT:  The #1 time people walk away from church and their relationship with God is during their college-age years!  Vision for Youth (VFY) is committed to doing all it can to help stop this exodus from the church.  They are holding a “Campus Ministry Summit” on October 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 1007 Ecorse Rd., Ypsilanti, MI.  This location is strategic because VFY has been granted approval for an on-campus organization at Eastern Michigan University.  Anyone working with college-age young adults is invited to attend this special summit.  The summit will feature solid, Biblically-based challenges and several discussion-oriented workshops and seminars geared directly for those working with college-age young adults.

Session topics include:
Helping teenagers transition into the overall life of your church
Helpful ideas for starting a college-age group in your church
Reaching out to college age young adults in your community
How your church can build growing relationships with college students
Impacting the university campus
Discipling college age students to reach their peers

There will be many resources and exhibits.  The registration fee is $30 ($20 per person for each additional individual from the same church) and includes snacks, lunch, all sessions, notes, and resources.  Registrations are due by October 5.  If you have any questions, contact Mel Walker by  Email, or Todd Walker at 734.787.3018, or www.visionforyouth.com.

MISSION HOUSES AVAILABLE FOR RENT:  Berlin Baptist Church in Marne, MI has 2 houses available for rent to missionaries (the former parsonage plus a mission house) for $250 month plus utilities.  Contact Candy Sherd at Berlin Baptist Church, 616.430.1076.

PARSONAGE AVAILABLE:  Chippewa Hills Baptist Church in Remus is making available the church’s parsonage this fall for missionaries or pastors that need housing. The house is available beginning in October.  The church doesn’t charge rent but ask that those using it take care of their own utilities.  If interested, contact Pastor Chuck Richardson, Chippewa Hills Baptist Church, Remus, MI 49340, 989-967-8205.
